Dr. Joe R. Danel, M.D., 82, was born Aug. 1, 1930, in Red Oak, Okla, to Lillie Cherry Danel and Logan H. Danel. He went home to be with the Lord on June 24, 2013.
Dr. Joe enlisted in the Air Force in May 1947 and was honorably discharged in May 1953.
He became a medic and later an X-ray technician while serving his tours of duty. His service included tours in Japan and Bermuda. He achieved the rank of staff sergeant and received the Korean Service Medal and the U.N. Service Medal.
Following his tour of duty in the Air Force, he entered Northeastern State Teachers College in Tahlequah, Okla., for his pre-med training.
He earned a doctorate degee in medicine from the University of Oklahoma in Oklahoma City in 1962. He served residencies at Baptist Hospital and St. Anthony’s Hospital, both in Oklahoma City. He later served his internship at St. Anthony’s.
Before coming to Jacksonville in May, 1972, Dr. Danel practiced medicine in Holdenville, Okla., at Physicians and Surgeons Clinic and Hospital. He moved to Jacksonville in May 1972. He retired from the Stripling Clinic in December 2006 at the age of 76, after spending 44 years in the medical profession.
Dr. Danel was a member of the Hughes Seminole Medical Society, Oklahoma State Medical Association, The American Medical Association, Texas Medical Association, the Cherokee County Medical Society and Rocky Point Methodist Church.
Flying airplanes was one of his greatest joys. He became a certified pilot in 1962 and spent many years pursuing his passion. Another pasion was driving a big rig truck and later in his career, he was able to own and operate his own truck. He also enjoyed fishing, hunting and spending time with family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers and four sisters.
Survivors include his wife, Shelva Danel of Jacksonville; daughter, Sandy Killian and husband, Don, of Meridian, Okla.; sons, Stacy Lambeth and Joe Danel Jr, both of Jacksonville; sister Mattie Stout and husband Jim of Kansas City, Mo.; brother Richard Danel and wife, Dorothy, of Stillwater, Okla., grandchildren Don Killian Jr. and wife Shana of Meridian, Okla., Christi Killian of Oklahoma City and Carla Killian of Edmond, Okla.; four great-grandchildren Michael Blair and wife Casey, Kristen Blair, Robbie Killian and Jake Killian; one great-great granddaughter, Ella Blair and several nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers will be Robbie Gowin, Bryan Gowin, Toby Gowin, Trae Gardner, Sean Rose and Ray Bouman.
Honorary pallbearers will be Doug Gowin, Billy Powell, Ray Davis, Bob Johnson, Bud Ridgely, Terry Mickler, Don Killian Jr., Donald Compton, Greg Compton and Gary Compton.
Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Wed., June 26, at Autry Funeral Home.
