George W. Powell, Jr.

JACKSONVILLE — George passed away on Oct. 10, 2012.

He was born June 12, 1932 in Mertens, Texas.

George served in the Air Force for over 26 years. After retiring from the Air Force, he worked at Rusk State Hospital for 16 years.

George was a Mason, a member of the American Legion and the VFW.

Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Lea Powell of Jacksonville; children Susan Avila and husband, Carlos, of Charlotte, NC., Linda Akin and  husband Willie of Whitehouse, Alice Raspberry of Galveston, George Powell III and wife Cynthia of Jacksonville and Paula Carlile of Terrell. He has seven grandchilren and four great-grandchildren.

He is also survived by his sister, Fran Acord and husband Barry of Athens and brother  Charles Powell and wife Bebe of Grandview and several nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents, George W. Powell, Sr., and Eula J. Tate Powell and his brother, Bill Powell.

Mr. Powell was buried at Richland Cemetery in Mertens, Texas.

He was a member of Cove Springs United Methodist Church for 22 years. Any memorials should be sent to the church, P.O.Box 2322, Jacksonville, TX, 75766.
