Mrs. LaVerne South Holcomb was born Sept. 30, 1929 in Mixon. She died Feb. 6, 2013 at the age of 83. She graduated from Mixon High School as Valedictorian of her graduating class in 1947.
She graduated from Lon Morris College and Stephen F. Austin College, Nacogdoches with a degree in Elementary Education. She taught school a few years and then decided to stay home and take care of her children.
She was a devoted mother and loved her children and grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Willis Neal Holcomb, her mother and father, Cullin and Pearl South, two sisters, Ottie Mae South and Grace Dickey, and three brothers, Marvin, Vestal, and Aubrey South.
She is survived by her daughter, Lisha Holcomb of Tyler, Texas and her son, Lewis Holcomb and wife Rosa of Jacksonville.
She is also survived by six grandchildren, Daria Pearl Holcomb of Tyler, Texas, Timothy Lewis Holcomb and wife Caitlin of Conroe, Texas and Elisha, Christopher, Hannah, and Joshua Holcomb of Jacksonville.
She is also survived by two cousins, James Tennison and Tommie Ruth Dotson of Jacksonville and several nieces and nephews. Also special friends, Peggy Reagan, Rick Gambol, Sandy Goin, Marilyn and Norvell Roberts and Eliese Blalock.
Services for Mrs. Holcomb will be at 2 p.m. Sat., Feb. 9, at Autry Funeral Home chapel in Jacksonville with Rev. Steve Edwards and Dr. Darin Wood officiating. Visitation will be held from noon – 2 p.m. Sat., Feb. 9, at Autry Funeral Home in Jacksonville.
Burial will be held at Jarratt Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Lewis Holcomb, Rick Gambol, Byron Carpenter, Steven Nava, Norvell Roberts and Sam Senesac.
Honorary pallbearers will be David Dennis and John Cundieff.
Mrs. Holcomb attended Central Baptist Church and was a member of Mary Martha Sunday School Class.
