Funeral services for Ottis S. Spraggins, age 91, of Jacksonville, are scheduled for 10:00 am Wednesday, February 13, 2013 at Autry Funeral Home chapel in Jack-sonville with Rev. Matt Gregory and Nolan Scruggs officiating.
Burial will be on his ranch at the Spraggins Family Cemetery.
Mr. Spraggins pass-ed away Saturday, February 9, 2013, in Jacksonville.
Ottis Selvin Sprag-gins was born on August 3, 1921 in Cherokee County, Texas to Jesse and Mary Jane Spraggins. He attended Enterprise School and from graduated Jacksonville High School in 1940. He was a lifetime resident of Jacksonville excluding his time spent in France in WWII. He is preceded in death by his parents, Jesse and Mary Jane and also his sister Pauline Ritter.
On July 10, 1942 he was inducted into the U.S. Army where he served in Northern France as a Tech 4 in the 988th Ordinance Base Depot Company. He received the Amer-ican Theater medal, EAME Campaign me-dal with a Bronze Star, the Good Conduct Medal and the WWII Victory Medal. He was discharged on Decem-ber 24, 1945.
He married Lottie Lou Martin in Decem-ber 1951 and they purchased land in North-ern Cherokee County where he resided the remainder of his life. He worked numerous years as a tool and die maker starting with Nichols Industries and retiring with Coil Tool & Die. He also worked for a period of time as a building contractor along with developing the Dogwood Hills subdivision on Lake Haw-kins. He had the talent of being a self-made engineer. If an idea could be conceived in his mind, he could build it. He designed and built his own water well drilling rig and loved working on his ranch and being in-volved with cattle. He always possessed a strong work ethic and strived to provide well for his family. He was a strong proponent of education. He at-tended the Nazarene Church for numerous years.
Family was very important to him and he is survived by his devoted wife of 61 years, Lottie, a son Rock, who considered his dad to be his hero, a cherished daughter-in-law, Sheri and two grandsons, Jesse and Stephen. Also, he has two brothers, J.D. and wife Patsy Spraggins of Tyler and Jim and wife Janice Spraggins of Jacksonville, and a number of nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers will be nephews including Nolan Scruggs, Jerry Scruggs, Roger Martin, Sammy Grimes, Danny Grimes, Scott Alex-ander, and grandsons Jesse and Stephen.
Honorary pallbearers will be Darrell Kennon, Tommy De-ment, Charles Wood, Claude Roberts, Don Maxwell, Mack Mc-Caig, David Spraggins, Daniel Smith and Clay Bevel.
The family offers a special thanks to the staff of Twin Oaks Nursing Home for their devoted care. In addition, heartfelt thanks goes to the special nursing care at ETMC-2nd floor, Jacksonville for their superior job during his last days, and a special thanks to his doctor of many years, Dr. James Low.
Visitation will be held from 5:00 – 7:00 pm Tuesday, February 12, 2013 at Autry Funeral Home in Jacksonville.
