Goodman wins Jacksonville Bass Club tourney

Last week the Jacksonville Bass Club fished Lake Quitman, which is located in the vicinity of Lake Fork. The lake was full and dingy. Visibility was about six inches deep. Quitman is blessed with a large variety of shallow aquatic plants which rims the entire lake.

Bass now on the move

The majority of bass have completed their spawn and are in transition. Most of the bass are in post-spawn. Post-spawn has often been referred to as either feast or famine. Some bass will remain shallow as long as good cover is available and forage is nearby. There will be a few isolated pockets or areas that will still hold spawning bass. As long as surface temperatures remain in the 70s bass should remain shallow. When surface temperatures reach about 84 degrees, most of the bass will move to summertime structure. Right now bass can be difficult to pattern because they are in transition. I’m already seeing some bass schooling on shad near mouths of coves. Around boat houses you can catch bass in the one to two pound range on Bandits, shallow running crankbaits, jerkbaits, flukes and worms. Many of these bass are suspended near the outside edge of boat houses.

Toyota Bass Classic ruled a success

The 2008 Toyota Texas Bass Classic held on Lake Fork on April, 18, 19 and 20, was heralded as an overwhelming success. This tournament consisted of 25 four-man professional fishermen teams. On Sunday, day three, there were only five, four-man teams left competing. First place winners lead by team captain Kelly Jordon, along with Lance Vick, David Walker and David Smith, brought in a three-day total of 54 bass weighing 228 pounds. Close behind them was the team No. 19 lead by Bobby Lane, with 219.12 pounds. Jordon weighed in the largest individual total of 85.8 pounds and the heaviest catch on the last day of 22.08 pounds. The team earned a paycheck of $250,000. Not bad for a few days of fishing.

Good baits helped Miller win tournament

A Nichols 3/8 oz. blue shad Hologram spinner bait helped me win a fishing tournament on Lake Winnsboro last weekend. It was a tough tournament. The bass were already stuffed with shad due to a recent shad spawn, and they were very reluctant to bite. When faced with a situation like this I go to my favorite Nichols spinner bait. This one spinner bait has helped me catch a lot of bass. It’s my “go-to bait” when the fishing is tough.

Catching fish on Lake Pinkston

Last week I got a chance to fish with Frank Lusk on Lake Pinkston. Not many fishermen talk about or fish Lake Pinkston because of its size and the lack of amenities on the lake.

Lake Fork producing double digit bass

Bass fishing on Lake Fork is really good according to professional bass fishing guide Randy Oldfield. I’ve fished with Oldfield off and on for the last ten years. Nowadays he is booked solid in the spring, and appointments are hard to get.
