Baccalaureate service worthy of attending

By Barbara Hugghins

Next week, Tuesday evening at 7 p.m., the graduates of Jacksonville High School and the Compass Center will participate in a baccalaureate service in the High School Auditorium.

The graduates invite their family, friends and classmates to join them in this ancient tradition.

Do you know the meaning and history of this tradition? Don’t feel badly; most people don’t either.

The word “baccalaureate” comes from the Latin phrase bacca laureus or “laurel berry.” A later meaning refers to a vassal farmer or young nobleman seeking to become a knight or even staff-bearer or shepherd.

The modern version refers to an address or sermon delivered to a graduating class at commencement.

The Jacksonville Ministerial Alliance feels that the baccalaureate address and service is an important milestone for the graduates and an important part of the graduation experience.

The JMA Chair Father Mark Kusmirek, Kelvin Reed and other ministers cooperate with the high school principal and counselors in planning this event.

So on Tuesday our graduates, seeking to become noble men and women as they go into the world, will hear an address by the Rev. Kevin King, whose son is in the graduating class.

We invite the community to come celebrate this baccalaureate tradition and the graduation of 266 students from Jacksonville High School and the Compass Center.

The Rev. Barbara Hugghins is associate minister at First United Methodist Church and a member of the Jacksonville Ministerial Alliance.
