Are you seeing the big picture?

Butterfly Ministry by Dr. Sam Smith

JACKSONVILLE —  “How great you are, O Sovereign LORD! There is no one like you, and there is no God but you, as we have heard with our own ears.”

2 Samuel 7:22

Our life on earth can be a tedious affair, can it not?  Working the same job day after day, year after year.  Raising kids, taking care of a family.  Life is a roller coaster ride, taking us from great times to tragic times – exhilarating to mundane and many levels of emotions in between.  With all the attention life requires of us, it is easy to lose sight of the majesty and sovereignty of Almighty God.  We can fail to see God’s “Big Picture” for each and every one of His children – you and me.

That is why it is so important for us to pray and meditate and study God’s Word.  Therein we see how wonderful and loving and great and BIG our God is.  We learn that there is much more to His plans for our lives than we have imagined.  The short time we spend in our earthly suits is miniscule compared to the eternal life God has planned for us.  Of all that we experience in our short time on earth, there is one most important thing for us to achieve - a loving, sincere relationship with Jesus Christ.  Accepting Christ as Savior and living for Him assures our eternity in heaven, and brings us sweet peace while on earth.  Failing to achieve that relationship means that we have wasted our lives, and our eternity will be one of unspeakable sadness.

Jesus said, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” (John 14:6)  Compared to living by those truths, everything else in life is insignificant.

No matter what we may acquire or achieve in our lives, it will all be for nothing if we fail to accept the truths of Christ and live our lives accordingly.  The Big Picture is this: “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.”  (John 3:16)

So, where are you in your earthly walk?  Are you so consumed by the business of living that you are neglecting God’s “Big Picture”?  Do you take time daily to pray and meditate on God’s Holy Word?  As long as we allow the stress and strain of daily living to distract us from realizing who God is and what He wants for us, we will never enjoy the peace that can only come from trusting His perfect plan for us – the plan that is fulfilled by faith in our Savior, Jesus Christ.

Our problems and hardships can seem big, but our God is infinitely bigger.  In the end of our time on earth, our understanding of His Bigness will be all that matters.

  • Where to look in the Bible when we are in danger

When we are in danger, read Psalm 91. Verses 9-13 tell us some of the ways the Lord protects us, “If you say, ‘The LORD is my refuge, and you make the Most High your dwelling, no harm will overtake you, no disaster will come near your tent.  For he will command His angels concerning you
to guard you in all your ways; they will lift you up in their hands,
so that you will not strike your foot against a stone. You will tread on the lion and the cobra; you will trample the great lion and the serpent.”

  • What would you ask of God?

If God spoke to you and told you could ask Him for one thing and He would grant it, what would you ask for?  Before you read any further, take some time to think about that question.  If the Creator of all there is offered to grant you one request, what would you consider the ultimate gift from Almighty God?

  • Listening for that trumpet call

I was awakened recently by a loud blast that sounded like a horn blowing.  Guess what my first thought was.  Yep, I wondered, “Is this it?  Is that the trumpet call?”
