Big crowd, score at Friday's rodeo

90 recorded in bull riding

It had to happen.

After being beat down for two nights by the fierce rodeo stock from Classic Pro Rodeo, the cowboys came storming back for revenge Friday night at the 46th annual Jacksonville Tops in Texas Rodeo.

Well, at least one cowboy named Jason Beck of Prairieville, La., made his mark with a memorable performance.

Beck, got a no score in the first section of bull riding, but on his second try near the end of Friday’s competition he made up for the earlier failure and wiped it off the books.

Beck was secure on his dusty mount named White Boy as he held on tight through. T he turns, spins and jukes for a 90 point ride and first place in bull riding.

The crowd, anxious to see entertainer Chris Cagle, howled in approval. Beck’s score was told and he tossed his hat in the air over the achievement and also the knowledge he would probably earn a nice paycheck for the feat.

Beck is on a roll in recent competition. He had a 94 in Springdale, Ark. to win the event in a rodeo close to his home.

The other eight bull riders for the night were shut out.

In steer wrestling the fans got to see the fastest time of the rodeo- as Tremaine Debose of Anderson flipped his steer like a cheese omelet, recording a sizzling time of 3.7 seconds.

Other results include: Dexter Goodman’s 4.1 took second, but could mean money for the Carthage cowboy; Britt Walters and Michael Wren each with 5.5 time;Jim Schueneman, Madisonville, 7.3; John Hill, Fairfield, 7.4; Brent Lassetter, 9.4; Mike Dickey of Caldwell’s 16.9 hurt his Dickey’s overall time, he had a 5.1 on the first night of competition.

A break in action allowed rodeo barrel man/clown Rudy Burns to entertain with a few jokes.

Burns also had a routine which featured his 26-year-old horse Zero in an act worthy of Vaudeville.

Southpaw roper Jeremy Landry of Armaundville, La. put a 11.2 time on Friday to lead the tie down roping pack. He had a time of 12.3 the first night. Glenn Beaux of Crowley, La. was ready go and had a 12.1 time. Bobby Mudd, the leader in the event after one night with a 9.9 time, fell back in the pack turning in a 13.9 on Friday.

The horses in both saddle bronc and bareback were feisty and hard to predict, tossing off cowboys left and right. The only ride of the night was a 67 score from Zach Rodgers of Zachary, La. for his ride of a horse called Ponca Springs.

Also held between events was the always popular Charles Ewalt Memorial calf scramble.

Dozens of children, under 10 years of age, invaded the arena and chased down calves for fun and prizes.

Team roping competition was tough as well as only five of the 12 cowboys got times. Leading the way was a sparkling 5.5 time by Bubba Bohac (Victoria) and Twister Cain (Gonzales). Other results: Tommy Edens (Gatesville) and Wade Clayton (Needville), 6.2;

Kyle Cauthorn (Justin) and Clay Whisenhunt (Terrell), 6.8; Shane Philipp and John Philpp (Washington), 7.2; Justin Copp (Justin) and Matt Kasner (Bridgeport), 8.5

The Cherokee County team of Cole Bolton andMichael Joe Parsley turned in an 8.4 time while Justin Holman and Clint Emerson teamed for a 15.4 time. Competing, but not scoring were: K.C. Holman andBobby Sanford and Cody Dison and Shawn Profili.

In barrel racing, Frierson, La. cowgirl Kristen Adams took the overall lead with a 16.42 ride. Other times were: Shantae Truelock, Henderson, 16.74; Laura Rodgers, Malakoff, 16.84; Arinda Richards, Quitman, 21.34; Jo Scarmardo, Caldwell, 21.58; Molly Childers, Mead, Okla., 21.60 and Brooke Oden, 26.97.

The rodeo performer Friday night was Chris Cagle. Saturday night, the show was scheduled to feature Stoney LaRue and his band.
