Region XIV Women: No. 1 Trinity Valley gets past Lady Jaguars, 71-59

Trinity Valley Community College, the top ranked team in NJCAA Division I, ginned a 41-31 halftime lead and made it stand, eventually turning back the upset-minded Jacksonville College women, 71-59, in a Region XIV game that took place in Jacksonville Saturday afternoon.

The Lady Cardinals moved to 16-1, 5-0 Region XIV with the win, while JC fell to 8-8, 1-3.

TVCC had four women in double figures, with Shalonte' Allen leading the way with 19 points.

Jazmine Spears popped in 14 for the Lady Cards.

Reading, Penn.-sophomore Deva'Nyar Workman burned the nets of the Curtis Carroll Fieldhouse for 28 points to spark JC, while freshman Cecile Makakala (Stockholm, Sweden) added 10.

“A win would have been than the 28 points, but we tried our hardest,” Workman said. “We played hard the whole game; we just have to keep playing and move on to the next one (game) now.”

Workman went on to say that she felt the game opened the Lady Jags' eyes to some things, despite the loss.

“I think as a a team everyone of us learned a lot in this game,” she said. “Hopefully we can correct a few things and take what we learned and apply it so that we can improve off of this loss; that's how we look at it.”

JC remains at home and will host Bossier Parish (La.) at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.

The Lady Cavaliers (4-9, 0-5) lost, 76-67, to Angelina on Saturday.
