Volleyball roundup: Season coming to a close for Jacksonville, Rusk and Bullard

JACKSONVILLE — The Jacksonville Maiden volleyball team will close out the 2012 campaign by hosting Whitehouse at 4:30 p.m. this afternoon and by welcoming Corsicana to Tomato Town next Tuesday for a 6:30 p.m. match.

In its last outing on Tuesday, Lindale thumped the Maidens 3-0 (25-9, 25-12, 25-15).

Jacksonville is 10-25 overall, 0-8 in District 16-4A.

Lindale also won the freshman match, 2-0 (25-13, 25-18), and the junior varsity affair, 2-0 (25-5, 25-10).

Lady Eagles host Palestine in season finale

RUSK — The 2012 season will draw to a close tonight for the Rusk Lady Eagles as they are scheduled to host Palestine at 4:30 p.m.

On Tuesday, Rusk fell to Mexia, 3-0, in District 19-3A play.

Shayla Townsend had nine kills and two blocks to lead the Lady Eagles (16-20, 2-5) in that match.

Juliann Bowling came away with 17 assists and Lexi Harvey had eight digs.

Rusk's freshman team improved to 22-4 by stomping Mexia 2-0 (25-12, 25-15), while the Lady Eagle junior varsity unit took a 2-1 (26-24, 23-25, 25-17) decision over the Lady Cats.

The Rusk JV will take a 14-13 record into tonight's season ender.

Bullard to celebrate Senior Night, Pink Out this afternoon

BULLARD — Bullard and Chapel Hill will square off at 4:30 p.m. this afternoon at Panther Gymnasium as Bullard will honor its seniors on Pink Out.

This will be the Lady Panthers' final home match of the year.

On Tuesday, Bullard fell 3-1 (23-25, 26-24, 12-25, 17-25) to Gilmer in a match that was played in Gilmer.

Mackenzie Fish had a double-double (10 kills, 15 digs) to lead the Lady Panthers (13-23, 2-8).

Meredith Daly made four blocks and Emily Tekell had a pair of aces while going 14-of-14 from the service line.

Lexi Abercrombie added 12 digs on the defensive side, with Bri Ridgley leading the Lady Panthers in assists with a dozen.

    As the late afternoon sun slowly dipped below the horizon Tuesday at Faulkner Park in Tyler, there was a soaking-wet head softball coach and a team of excited young Jacksonville Fightin' Maidens that had streaks of white chalk smeared across their faces, uniform tops and pants, milling around the infield, in no hurry to board the team bus for the ride back home.

    Chris Holcomb stroked a three-run triple that traveled to the fence in left field in the third inning, which was a part of a 2 for 3 night, as Jacksonville plastered John Tyler, 11-0, Tuesday in a District 16-4A encounter that was played at Mike Carter Field.

    Racking up three RBI and two runs scored for the Tribe (7-16-1, 2-6 16-4A), Holcomb triggered a six-run third stanza for Jacksonville, with the Indians scoring the remained of their runs in the fifth frame.

  • Alto.gif Crisp no-hitter sends Lady jackets to 16-1 win over Wells

    Alto celebrated Senior Night Friday by trampling Wells, 16-1, in a game that featured a no-hitter being thrown by Lady Jacket Madison Crisp.

    Crisp struck out 10 and did not walk a batter in coasting to the win.

    Alto recognized its two seniors, Carenza Johnson and Dariyana Moore, on their special day.

    The Alto Yellowjackets boys track team won the District 21-A-I Track & Field Championship by a landslide last week at J. F. Whitaker Stadium in Cushing.

    The 'Jackets totaled 272.5 points, with Cushing (92) and New Summerfield (73) completing the top three.

    “Our high school boys won district with 272 points, which is impressive to go over 200 points in any meet,” Alto athletic director, Paul Gould, said. “Our kids competed great and they represented Alto great. All of our coaches, as well as myself are pleased with the way that they got after it.”

    For New Summerfield, the district meet brought another dose of improvement on the cinders for the Hornets and Lady Hornets.

    As the old sports saying goes, “sometimes it's better to be lucky than good.”

    Lady Luck stayed far away from a trio of Jacksonville High tennis players on Monday as Ellie Day, Samantha Lee and Kristie Savage were in the Metroplex, having qualified for the Class 4A Region II Championship Tournament that was hosted by University Texas Arlington.

    That's because Schultz excelled at the plate and on the pitching rubber as the Lady Guard whittled out a hard-fought, 5-4, district win over the Lady Saints of Dallas First Baptist on Monday afternoon.

    To put the Jacksonville Tribe boys soccer team's successful season and deep post season run in perspective, it had been just over three years since any team from Jacksonville had participated in a regional tournament.

    And although the Tribe fell, 2-1, on the scoreboard to Spring Woods on Friday in the Class 4A, Region III semi-final, what this year's group was able to achieve will be remembered long after the painful memories of Friday's match fade away.
