Jacksonville Daily Progress

HENDERSON — Playing without five starters who were participating in other school activities, Henderson proved to be no match for Bullard on Friday.

Bullard’s, left-handed pitcher, Zach Eschberger threw a one-hitter, handcuffing Henderson in a 5-0 win for the Panthers in District 16-3A league play at Lions Field on Friday night.

Eschberger struck out 16 in the game and walked only two as only three Lions base-runners reached first. The no-hitter was vanquished on a seventh-inning lead-off single by Jeffrey Holt.

The freshman lefty Eschberger had two previous no-hitters in his previous two starts.

Nine Lions errors were a thorn for Henderson, with three of five Bullard runs unearned.

After a Trevor Rumbelow RBI-single plated lead-off hitter Holden Bryant for a 1-0 lead early.

Eschberger began his run striking out two of three batters, and retired the side in the second and fifth innings.

Bullard put up three runs in the top of the fourth inning. Weston Gray started the rally with a triple. He scored one batter later as Holden Bryant belted an RBI-double and a 2-0 lead. Haden Bryant reached base on one of nine Lion errors.

The Henderson Lady Lions rode the strong left-arm of University of Texas Lady Longhorn-signee, Tiara Davis and a two-run bomb from Karley Free, en route to a 4-0, win over the Bullard Lady Panthers on Friday afternoon.

The difference maker in the game was the Bullard bats could not get going, and Henderson’s bats will be a force to reckon with in the post-season.

Davis, handcuffed Bullard with 13 strikeouts, one walk, and allowed just the one hit in the shutout win.

After two innings of scoreless ball, the Lady Lions scratched the board when Natalie McQuiston’s double plated the first run.

Henderson added another run in the bottom of the fourth inning when catcher Jessica Thomas cranked an RBI-double, for a 2-0, Lady Lions advantage.

The Lady Lions got some more insurance in the sixth inning on the two-run dinger from Free with one on to account for the scoring in the game.

Bullard’s lone hit came from Bullard’s reliever on the mound, CoCo Springer.

Both McQuiston and Thomas each went  2-for-3 for the Lady Lions, adding singles to their RBI-doubles.
