Bullard's Hunter Phelps lifted a total of 1,580 pounds of iron to win the state championship of the 220-pound weight class at the Texas High School State Powerlifting Meet, Division 2, which took place Friday and Saturday at the Taylor County Expo Center in Abilene.
Phelps handled five pounds more than runner-up Ty Tamlin of Buna in earning top bragging rights.
In the 181-pound category, Jeremy Turner of Rusk came in second place, lifting a total of 1,500 pounds.
Bullard's Aaron Johnson had lifts totaling 1,430 pounds to come in fourth.
In the Class 3A team standings, Kennedale lifters earned 15 points to win the team championship, with Rio Hondo tallying 13 points followed by Buna (12) and Mesquite Poteet with 10.
Bullard would in fifth in the team standings, earning nine points.
