Jacksonville College assistant womens basketball coach Rocio Medrano-Lopez is turning pro.
Medrano-Lopez submitted her letter of resignation on Thursday after deciding to accept an offer to play professional basketball in Mexico, her native country.
Medrano-Lopez was in her first at JC.
“Coach Medrano-Lopez received an offer that was simply too good to pass up,” JC athletic director Lynn Nabi said. “From a time stand point, it would be impossible for her to continue to coach here and play professionally.
“We fully support her decision and we are going to miss her smile and hard-working attitude and the support that she gave our student athletes.”
Nabi said that the vacancy would soon be listed on the NCAA and NJCAA job boards.
“We will do a national search to see who is out there,” he said. “We're not in a big hurry at this time. It's more important for us to get a good fit.”
Medrano-Lopez came to JC last summer after finishing up her collegiate eligibility at University of Science and Arts Oklahoma.
Medrano-Lopez is also a member of the Mexican National team.
