Jacksonville finished in fourth place in the team standings of the 16-4A Golf Championship, which was contested at Pine Dunes Resort and Golf Club in Frankston on Monday and Tuesday.
The Indians checked in at 670 and trailed Lindale (639), Whitehouse (648) and Nacogdoches (652) in the team standings, while finishing ahead of Whitehouse “B” (725), Corsicana (754) and John Tyler (978).
Lindale and Whitehouse punched tickets to the Class 4A, Region II championships, which are scheduled for April 15 and 16 at Waterchase Golf Club in Arlington after finishing one, two.
Also included in that prestigious mix will be Jacksonville's Cameron Brown.
Brown shot rounds of 81 on Monday and 76 on Tuesday to finish at 157, which was the fourth-lowest among all the contestants.
“Cameron really stepped up his game on the final day,” Jacksonville coach Cecil Newton said. “I knew that he had a shot at qualifying for regionals going into the (district) tournament and we are proud that he will be representing us at the regional level.”
Among the other Indians that took part in the 16-4A tourney were, Trent Samson (81-80 — 161), Anthony Mobley (89-88 — 177), Cade Cessna (91-87 — 178) and Cash Cleaver (88-103 — 191).
“The boys really improved over the season and I expect good things next year,” Newton said.
Collin Frizzell of Nacogdoches was the overall medalist. He notched rounds of 70 and 71 to end up at 141.
NOTE: Brown, the son of Dean and Mary Carol Brown, tuned up for the district tournament by finishing in second place at the NTJPGA Athens tour stop on March 17...Brown shot a 76 in that event, which is a part of the NTJPGA Spring Series...Brown finished one stroke behind Caden Coplin of Forney who carded a 75 to win the tournament.
