21-A-I Girls All-District Basketball: New Summerfield places Melendez and Derrett onto First Team

JACKSONVILLE —

New Summerfield High School seniors Maritzza Melendez and Simone Derrett were named to the 21-A-I Girls All-District basketball team following a vote of the loop coaches.

Both young ladies were First Team picks.

The Lady Hornets, who finished with a 19-13 record, also sent seniors Ramie Weaver and Cindy Medellin to the conference's Second Team roll.

Melendez led New Summerfield in scoring, averaging 15.3 points per game. She also hit a team-high 25 3-pointers.

Melendez also accounted for 4.3 steals, 3.6 assists and 3.1 rebounds per game.

Derrett scored 12 ppg. last season and hauled down just under seven boards a night, which was second best on the team.

Kiandra Taylor of Neches was the district’s Most Valuable Player, with Wells' Whitney Tobias picking up Offensive Player of the Year lauds.

The Defensive Player of the Year honors went to Alesha Townsend of Mount Enterprise.

Alto's JaKamri Green earned Newcomer of the Year plaudits and Freshman of the Year went to Cushing's Sammi Jo Brashears.

Finally, Neches' Andy Snider earned Coach of the Year honors.
