Young's game-winning double earns Guard a win
EDGEWOOD — Brook Hill took a break from conference play to pay a visit to Edgewood Friday night. A Ryan Young double turned out to the game-winning hit as Brook Hill came away with a 4-3 decision over the Bulldogs. Edgewood led 3-1 after four complete, but the Guard was a able to plate a run in the sixth and a pair of runs in the top of the seventh. Clayton Engel had a couple of hits for the winners and Jonah Gonzalez had a two-base hit and scored twice for the Guard. Drew Robertson drove in a pair of runs also. Kendall Kerns worked the final-two frames to earn the pitching win. Brook Hill is scheduled to visit Dallas Lutheran at 2 p.m. this afternoon.
16-4A Softball: Corsicana stymies Jacksonville nine
CORSICANA — Corsicana's Lady Bulldogs solidified a playoff spot by downing Jacksonville 10-0 on Friday. The Maidens (9-15, 1-5 16-4A) will take on Nacogdoches at 6 p.m. tonight at Fight'n Maiden Field.
16-3A Softball: Lady Bulldogs rally past Lady Panthers, 4-2
KILGORE — Bullard won the battle but lost the war Friday afternoon at Stream Flo Park in Kilgore. The Lady Panthers out hit the Lady Bulldogs, 7-3, but Kilgore's hits were timely ones as the Lady Bulldogs plated two runs in the bottom of the sixth to squeeze out a 4-2, come-from-behind victory. Bullard stranded eight base runners in the game, which proved to be costly. Taylor Frederick punched out two hits to lead the Lady Panthers at the plate, while Sarah Wakefield, Katie Lewis, Lanie Lassiter, Sara Ritch and Hana Woyt all had singles. Bullard (15-10, 3-5 16-3A), which was mathematically eliminated from post-season play with Friday's loss, hosts Gladewater at 5 p.m.
19-3A Baseball: Groesbeck pummels Rusk
GROESBECK — Groesbeck beat Rusk for the second time this season, winning 11-0 at the Goats' home park on Friday night. Josh Raiborn worked the first three frames for Rusk and struck out seven. The Goats scored eight times in the home half of the fourth to break things open. The Eagles (10-12, 5-2 16-3A) will return home tonight to battle Mexia (1-6 in 19-3A) at 7 p.m.
Tennis: JMS's Roper wins big at Wills Point
WILLS POINT — Hannah Roper, representing Jacksonville Middle School, went 4-0 on the day to win the championship in 7th-grade girls's singles at the Wills Point Middle School on Saturday. Roper knocked off an opponent From Rockwall by a score of 8-5 in the title match. JMS also had three fourth-place efforts. Seth Bonner & Abraham Silva took fourth in 7th-grade boy's doubles while Austin Pierce finished in the identical position in 8th-grade boy's singles. In 8th-grade mixed doubles, the JMS pairing of Ashlynn Miller & Dustin Ellis went 2-2 for the tourney to come in fourth.
