16-4A Baseball: Smith pitches Tribe to win over Lions
TYLER — Mason Smith struck out eight in 5.2 innings of work to help send Jacksonville to a 7-2 District 16-4A win over John Tyler on Tuesday. Michael Sexton came in and worked the final 1.1 frames to secure the win for the Indians (7-13, 1-2 164A). Jacksonville racked up a 6-1 lead after four complete as the Tribe plated three runs in the opening frame. Each team had eight hits a piece. Cash Cleaver and Brett Eckles drove in runs for the Indians. The loss dropped the Lions to 0-8, 0-3.
16-3A Baseball: Bullard suffers first loop loss
BULLARD — The Panthers of Bullard incurred their first District 16-3A defeat on Tuesday night when Gilmer edged the Panthers 8-7 in Bullard. Bullard is now 14-5, 4-1 in district and is a game behind league-leading Gilmer. Haden Bryant went 2-for-3 for the Panthers and scored twice. Holden Bryant as a 2-for-5 evening, drove a run in, scored a run and swiped a base. J. P. Hendrix, Trevor Rumbelow, Jacob Provencher and Jesse Duplechin all hit safely for the Panthers. Provencher had three of his club's RBI.
18-2A Softball: Troup nine whip Sabine , 9-2
LIBERTY CITY — In a game that was closer for much of the night than the final score indicated, Troup polished off Sabine 9-2 to move to 8-0 in District 18-2A — the Lady Tigers are 22-4-2 overall — Tuesday evening at Lady Cardinal Field. The game was tied at two all after one inning, with Troup moving ahead 4-2 in the second. The Lady Tigers kept that advantage for the rest of the game before capping things off by tacking on five runs in the top of the seventh. Troup collected 14 hits in the game, with Josee Ross leading the way with a 3-for-3 effort. Ross also doubled and drove in two runs. Bethany Mason went 3-for-5 and scored twice. Another player of impact for the winners was Katelyn Standley. Standley went 2-for-4, doubled, drove in a run and scored once. Lee Ann Lloyd had a pair of two-base hits in four official trips and had a RBI. Ross went the distance in the circle and gave up six hits and struck out nine. Both of Sabine's runs were unearned. The Lady Cardinals are now 6-2 in 18-2A.
18-2A Baseball: Cardinals move ahead of Tigers in standings
LIBERTY CITY — Round One in the battle for District 18-2A superiority went to the home standing Sabine Cardinals on Tuesday evening as Sabine pecked out a 6-1 win, out hitting the Tigers 8-3 in the process. The Cardinals are now 7-0 in conference, while Troup drops to 6-1 (12-5 overall). Luke Smith took the loss on the hill for Troup.
JMS tennis team wins, 14-7, over 'Doches netters
Jacksonville solidly defeated Nacogdoches, 14-7, in a middle school tennis match Tuesday. Hannah Roper won two singles matches for JMS, while Victoria Martinez, Austin Pierce, Adam Verhelle, Conner Coughlin, Evan Yount, Alfredo Alvarez and Trayvion Montgomery-Horn had a win each. JMS notched five wins in boys doubles matches on the day.
