High School Football: Area Roundup Week 8

JACKSONVILLE —

Henderson Lions (2-5, 1-2) at Bullard Panthers (3-3, 1-2)

7:30 p.m. Friday at Panther Stadium in Bullard

Head Coaches: Phil Castles, Henderson; Shannon Wilson, Bullard

Last Week: Henderson 28, Spring Hill 23; Chapel Hill 56, Bullard 7

Next Week: Kilgore at Henderson; Bullard at Gilmer

Quick Take — The winner of this game will have the inside track to the final playoff berth out of District 16-3A, so there is a lot on the line for both clubs despite their records...Bullard should get a boost from playing at home, but will need a skilled player or two to step up and help QB Connor Mebane who accounted for 59-percent of his teams total yards in the loss to Chapel Hill last week...The Lions' overall record is a bit deceiving as Henderson has played a tough non-district schedule that included Prestonwood Christian, Hallsville and Nacogdoches —three playoff bound clubs....The Lions usually mix things up like a Hamilton-Beach blender, so the Panther defense will have to be able to stop the run and the pass in this one.

Troup (5-2, 1-1) at White Oak (6-1, 1-1)

7:30 p.m. Friday at Roughneck Stadium in White Oak

Head Coaches: Dennis Alexander, Troup; Gerry Stanford, White Oak

Last Week: Tatum 35, Troup 21; White Oak 46, Harmony 14

Next Week: Troup at Harmony; White Oak at Sabine

Quick Take — The premier storyline in this game is Troup is expected to be without the services of QB/LB Blake Lynch who fractured his wrist last week...And while an athlete of Lynch's status cannot be replaced, Brandon Hearon should do a respectable job under center...The loss of Lynch on the defensive side may be a tough pill for the Tigers to swallow...Troup will be facing a 'Neck defense that is giving up under 12 points a game and has held opponents to seven or less points four times this season...White Oak has won four of the last five meetings between the two clubs and leads the all-time series 13-6-1.

Any Jacksonville Fightin' Indian football fans that have not taken note of the Tribe's new conference home — District 16-5A — will probably want to take a few minutes and get familiar with a league that has been labeled as perhaps “the deepest (Class 5A) district in the state” by at least one expert in such matters.

Josh McCown expects the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to be better this season. He's just reluctant to speculate how much.

The 35-year-old quarterback is beginning his 13th NFL training camp, though it's his first as a team's projected starter since he was with the Arizona Cardinals in 2004.
