Girls H.S. Hoops Roundup: Jacksonville opens new season with road win; Lady Hornets fall to Winona


Jacksonville 59, Tyler Lee 45 — Jacksonville outscored Tyler Lee 33-24 in the second half to open the 2013-'14 campaign with a 59-45 victory over the Lady Raiders Tuesday night in Tyler. Jasmine Parson ignited Jacksonville by pumping in a 23 points, which included three shots from downtown. She also started an 8-0 run in the first half that gave the Maidens the lead for good. The Maidens' Inchantra Kendrick led all players with 25 points, however. Lee played without three starters in the game. Jacksonville led 26-21 at the break before pulling away in the second half. The Lady Raiders were led offensively by Dominique Thomas with 13 points. Jacksonville will return to the hardwood at 7:30 p.m.Tuesday by hosting Diboll.


Winona 58, New Summerfield 41 — New Summerfield opened the new season Tuesday night by traveling to Winona, with Winona escaping with a 58-41 win over the Lady Hornets. New Summerfield battled until the final buzzer and managed to close ground late in the game. Lady Hornet sophomore Tanya Saurez led all players with 16 points and freshman Alex Turner put in 12. Chasity Hernandez drained two shots from beyond the arc to finish with six points. Karli McCown and Hallee Lawson added two points apiece. Winona also won the JV game, 27-17. New Summerfield was paced in scoring by Tachina Johnson's seven points. The Lady Hornets will host All Saints Episcopal at 6:30 p.m. Friday.

    One would probably be hard pressed to find any summer youth sports camp with a more streamlined approach than was found at the Jacksonville Fightin' Maiden Basketball camp, which took place this week at the Jacksonville High School Gymnasium.

    “We just asked the young ladies for two things,” Tony Harris, Jacksonville High School head girl's basketball coach, stated on Wednesday. “First, we wanted them to have fun and secondly we wanted them to learn control — to be able to control their eyes, their body and the (opposing) defender.”
