AP Class A all-state: Leon, Whitaker, Hackett represent Alto on elite unit

ALTO —

The 2013 Texas Associated Press Sports Editors 1A all-state high school football team was released Sunday, with three Alto Yellowjackets being honored on the elite squad.

Leading the way was Nicholas Leon, a senior kicking specalist, who picked up second team recognition. Leon booted through 52-of-62 extra point tries and nailed 5-of-8 field goals.

The Mean Sting's feature back, Jacolby Whitaker, a senior also, garnered a spot onto the honorable mention list.

Whitaker, in 13 games, had 201 carries for 1,702 yards and 30 touchdowns.

He also caught 11 passes for 149 yards.

Defensive lineman Tyarius Hackett, an 11-grader, seecured a place on the honorable mention along side Whitaker.

Hackett was a major contributer to the Yellowjacket defense for the second-stright season.

Alto finished 9-4 and went three rounds deep in the Class 1-A-I state playoffs this fall under head coach Paul Gould, who is a graduate of Jacksonville High School.
