Van takes two to win series over Lady Panthers

Van made the most of limited opportunities to defeat Bullard 2-0 in a best-of-three Class 3A, Region II quarterfinal on Friday and Saturday at Lindale High School.

The Lady Vandals will now advance to play Celina in a regional semi-final late next week.

Celina crushed Princeton, 9-2, to advance opposite of the Lady Vandals.

Bullard saw its fine season come to an end with the loss. The Lady Panthers, the District 16-3A champions, finish up with a record of 24-6.

Fri.: Game 1 — Van 2, Bullard 1

Texas Woman's University signee, Kristi “Coco” Springer hurled a two-hitter, but it wasn't enough as Van prevailed in Friday's series opener, 2-1.

Ashleigh Gillard and Springer hit safely for Bullard, with Springer driving in the Lady Panthers' lone run.

In the circle, Springer fanned a half dozen in seven frames of work.

N. Gandy went the distance for Van and chalked up eight strike outs.

Sat.: Game 2 — Van 6, Bullard 4

Van jumped out to a 2-0 advantage after two innings of play and never looked back.

After plating three more runners in the fourth and a single run in the top of the sixth, the Lady Vandals led. 6-0, before Bullard got things cranked up on offense.

A 3-run sixth highlighted things for Bullard, put it was too little, too late.

Gillard, Springer and Taylor Frederick each accounted for a pair of hits for the Lady Panthers.

Springer held Van to just two hits through six innings, but an uncharacteristic 10 errors by the Lady Panthers gave the Lady Vandals ample opportunities, which they were more than willing to take advantage of.

Bullard loses four members of this year's squad to graduation. That short list includes, Springer, Frederick, Nikki Johnson and Hana Woyt.

One of the main things I really look forward to in the summer is locating and catching schooling bass. Schooling bass are not always easy to catch. Sometimes they are very aggressive and will react to a variety of baits. At other times they become very hard to catch. I have several baits that I rely on, but some are favorites.
