Jacksonville Daily Progress
The Jaguars of Jacksonville College had their shining moments in Tuesday's Region XIV contest against Lee College that took place in Jacksonville.
The JC men closed the game out on a 9-2 run and ended the first half on a 6-0 spurt.
But the deciding factor in the 89-83 Lee win was an 18-4 Rebel run to open the second half as Lee rocketed out to an 18-point (60-42) lead after the first five minutes of the final segment had been played.
That deficit, despite a valiant effort, simply proved to be too much for the Jags (7-13, 2-8 Region XIV) to overcome.
The Rebels ran their slate to 12-7, 5-3 with the victory.
Despite shooting 55.2-percent (16 of 29) from the field in the first half, the Jags trailed Lee 42-38 at halftime.
The Rebels came out in the second half and switched defenses at will, keeping the Jags out of sync offensively, until the second time out of the half called by JC head coach Jody Bailey that came with 15:52 left in the game seemed to get the Jags reeled in and focused.
JC then peeled off a 9-1 run to start their comeback attempt.
JC got to within four points, 87-83, following an off-balanced Jake Eynon trey from the right wing, his fourth of the half, that came with 27 ticks showing on the clock.
After Lee's Fred Richardson missed a couple of free throws on the Rebels ensuing trip down the deck, the Jags were able to launch a couple of treys in the closing seconds, but neither was close to the cup.
University of Memphis signee Trahson Burrell sparked Lee with a game-best 27 points, with Deng Deng adding 19.
Raheem Watts poured in 20 points for the Jags, with Derrick Modest adding 15 and Anthony Sharp and Eynon dumping in 14 apiece.
The Jags have an open date Saturday but will be back in action on Jan. 29 when they visit Angelina College.
