CUSHING — The New Summerfield High School girl's basketball team rallied from being down by 10 points late in the third quarter to tie the game up in the final segment, only to have host Cushing find another gear late to pull off the upset over the Lady Hornets, 36-35, on the Galkats' deck Tuesday night.

Mackenzie Tucker gave a beastly performance in scoring 20 of the Galkats' points while hauling in 21 rebounds on the night.

The Lady Hornets (17-10, 5-3 in District 21-A-I) tied the game at 30 with 4:38 left to play and appeared to have establish a game-winning rhythm.

But Cushing (16-10, 2-4) scored the next five points to quickly extinguish the Lady Hornet spark.

Brittani Pruitt put in a driving layup, after a Lady Hornet had missed a pair from the charity stripe, to put the Galcats in front.

Tucker then took control and scored a deuce and followed that up with a free throw that came with 1:53 to go.

Simone Derrett's turnaround jumper from about 12 feet out put the Lady Hornets to within three, 35-32, with 43 ticks showing on the scoreboard, but that was as close as the New Summerfield girls would be able to get.

Ultimately the Lady Hornets could not overcome an anemic shooting night that saw the New Summerfield girls connect at just a 24-percent (12-50) rate from the field.

New Summerfield's leading point maker was Maritzza Melendez with 14.

Derrett added 10 and completed her double-double by shagging 10 caroms.

Cindy Medellin led New Summerfield on the glass by retrieving 11 rebounds.

Medellin and Ramie Weaver scored three points each for New Summerfield.

The Lady Hornets return to the court at 5 p.m. Friday by entertaining league-leading Neches.
