Sydney Littlejohn held No. 1-ranked Henderson to just two hits and struck out 10 Lady Lions along the way as the Lady Eagles upset Henderson, 3-0, at Lady Eagle Park Tuesday evening.
The game pitted pitchers Littlejohn, a University of Alabama signee, against Henderson's Tiara Davis, who has signed with University Texas-Austin.
“This was an awesome win for our program,” Rusk head coach Ashley Renner said. “This was the best offensive game that we have had in a long time. We busted out our bats (last night) and consistently made contact and hit the ball well all night.”
Leading the way at the plate for Rusk was Chelsea Daniels, who had a run-scoring hit for the lady Eagles' first run, Cheyanne Phillips, Littlejohn and Julianne Bowling.
“Bowling had a .700 on-base percentage for us in the game,” Renner said. “I was really pleased to get that from our lead-off hitter. She did a great job for us.”
Renner said that she hopes that her team will be able to build off of the victory.
“I told our girls that they have proven that they can play with the best teams in the state and that they should not settle for just making the playoffs this year,” Renner said. “If you can beat the No.1-ranked team in the state and a pitcher like Tiara Davis who is headed to Texas, then there is not any reason why you can't make a deep playoff run.”
Rusk visits Carthage at 6 p.m. Friday.
