NEW SUMMERFIELD —
The recently completed 2014 baseball campaign at New Summerfield High School could be labeled as a series of firsts as the Hornets to took the diamond of the very first time, which, obviously led to a bevy of subsequent initial-time happenings.
None of which are more noteworthy than accolades earned by Hornet baseballers Rafael Garcia and Johnathan Trinidad.
These young men have been named to the Texas High School Coaches Association Class A Academic all-State team as Honorable mention selections.
To be nominated an athlete, student trainer or manager must be in good standing with the team and be of good moral character.
He, or she, must also have been a senior and had an overall grade point average of at least 92.
Over the varsity portion of their schedule, the Hornets posted a record of 3-7 this past season under the guidance of head coach Justin Willis.
Willis said that the key to New Summerfield begin able to successfully launch a baseball team was much the doing of the squad's seniors.
“Our senior really poured their heart into learning the game of baseball and we are all proud of their contributions to help the team,” Willis said.
New Summerfield will be a full-fledge varsity member of Class A, District 20 next season.
Other teams in the circuit include: Cayuga, Kerens, LaRue LaPoyner, Malakoff Cross Roads, Martin's Mill, Neches and Trinidad.
