August is shaping up to be a busy month, as could be expected, with the new high school football season set to open on Aug. 29 — the Tribe host the Pine Tree Pirates on that evening.
According to Chris Taber, Jacksonville athletic director and head football coach, things will get rolling with a free football camp for all incoming 7th, 8th and 9th grade football players that will take place Aug 4-5.
The camp will run from 10:00 a.m. until noon each day and will be held at the Happy Valley training grounds behind the high school.
On Aug. 4-8 a lineman camp for all 10th-12th-grade offensive and defensive linemen will get under way at noon each day at Happy Valley.
Taber said that it is important that all linemen make plans to attend this camp, which is free.
Fall training camp is set to open up on Monday Aug. 11.
The Indians, according to University Interscholastic League rules, must open camp a week later than schools that did not go through spring practices.
All high school football players should make plans to report at 7:30 a.m. on Aug. 11.
The freshmen will workout from 8-10:30 a.m., with the junior varsity and varsity squads schedule to hit the field from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
Varsity players will have a two-hour break and should bring a nutritious sack lunch each day.
Key dates, prior to the regular season opener, for Fightin' Indian fans to make note of are Aug. 18 (Pow Wow, 6:30 p.m., Tomato Bowl) and Aug. 22 (scrimmage game at Bullard High School, time to be announced).
