LUBBOCK — Former Bullard High School standout Minta Spears has been included in a group of 10 women that have been nominated for the Big 12 Female Sportsperson of the Year honor.
The winner of the laud will be named today.
Spears, is a member of the Texas Tech Lady Raider basketball team and is the youngest nominee this year. Spears is listed as a redshirt sophomore on the Texas Tech roster.
Other nominees include: Whitney Canion (Baylor, Sr., softball); Hallie Christofferson (Iowa State, Sr., women's basketball); Alex Jones (Kansas, Sr., softball); Chantay Caron (Kansas State, Sr., women's basketball), Taylor Spears (Oklahoma, Sr., gymnastics); Jenna Blumer (Oklahoma State, Sr., equestrian); Alex Child (TCU, Jr., equestrian) and Elizabeth Gulick (West Virginia, Sr., volleyball).
Spears was honored earlier this year as an Academic All-Big 12 First Team member.
She regularly speaks to student groups in the Lubbock Independent School District on such topics as leadership and responsibility.
Spears, the daughter of Randy and Sandy Spears, also gives of her free time to the South Plains Food Bank, Thank-athon, Angel Tree as well as working with those who have special needs.
She also has spent time in Uganda the last two summers doing missionary work.
Spears is also involved in the Fellowship of Christian Athletes.
