High School Baseball: Rusk goes 4-0 to win Summer League Tournament; Indians finish 2nd
Rusk's hitters were in top form during Friday and Saturday's Summer League End of Season Tournament, which was played at Summers Norman Field on the Jacksonville High School campus.
The Eagles went 4-0 and outscored their opponents by an average score of 13-5 in route to winning the championship.
Rusk slaughtered Bullard, 21-0, in the Eagles' opener, before beating Van 14-10 later in the day.
On Saturday, Rusk edged Brownsboro, 4-2, and topped Jacksonville, 13-7.
The Tribe's only loss of the tourney came at the hands of the Eagles as Jacksonville went 3-1 to take second place — Van was third with a 2-2 record, Brownsboro went 1-4, with Bullard going 0-4.
The Tribe's wins came over Bullard (10-3), Brownsboro (11-1) and against Van (17-0).
Tournament coordinator and Jacksonville head varsity baseball coach Mike Eckles said that he was happy with his team's showing.
“I was extremely proud of the accomplishments of our players and coaches this summer,” he said. “Our goals for the summer were to come to come together and play as a team, to learn how to win, to build up and encourage one another, accept the roles given in each game and to always carry ourselves like champions (and) we accomplished all of these things, as well as many others.”
As for the tourney, Eckles stated that the considered it a success.
“We had a great tournament,” Eckles said. “Each team played very hard and represented their towns well.
“Congratulations to Rusk for winning the tournament championship with a 4-0 record. I watched outstanding plays and tremendous effort by young men on every team.”
Jacksonville was coached by Steve Grimes.
