HALLSVILLE —

A free kick from 18 yards out by senior Rachel Stirneman was all that was needed for the Jacksonville High School girls soccer team to notch its first win of the season.

In defeating Hallsville, 1-0, in the first round of the Hallsville Tournament Thursday morning, the Maidens were able to crack into the win column.

"It feels good to finally get that monkey off of our backs," Maiden head coach Kiff Wiemers said. "I can see our improvement and I think that we are slowly starting to come around."

Angie Sanchez made 11 saves in goal for Jacksonville to earn a clean sheet win.

Bracket play will conclude the tourney today.

On Tuesday, Jacksonville lost, 1-0, to Athens.

Jacksonville was called for a hand ball infraction in the box, with a Lady Hornet getting the free kick and depositing the ball into the back of the net to give Athens the victory.

"I know we lost, but I thought for probably the first time this year we looked like a varsity team out there against Athens," Wiemers said.

JUNIOR VARSITY: Jacksonville blanked Athens, 2-0, in a junior varsity match Tuesday. Scoring for the Maidens was Alyssa Villanueva and Alyssa Hammons
