LUFKIN — Angelina College took a big step in nailing down a berth in the Region XIV Championship Tournament by turning back the Jaguars of Jacksonville College, 72-63, Wednesday evening in Lufkin.
JC head coach Jody Bailey said that his team wasn't able to get the defensive stops that it needed, and the Roadrunners (10-13, 4-8 Region XIV) and the Jags (7-14, 2-9) traded baskets for most of the night, with AC in the lead. “We're not feeling sorry for ourselves and there will be no pity parties around here,” Bailey said. “Our focus is on getting ready to play a fine Lamar-Port Arthur (18-4, 7-4) team on Saturday (4 p.m. tip-off in Jacksonville).”
Chris Campbell put in 13 to lead JC, with Derrick Modest adding 11 points, followed by Malachi Christoper coming in to add 10 off of the bench. Deng Leek chipped in 11 points to compliment his eight rebounds and three blocks. Johnathan Taylor had six blocks on the night.
