With Old Man Winter's latest dose of the wet, and sometimes freezing, stuff, local and area high school softball teams, for the most part have had the start of the 2014 season pushed back a couple of days, as all games on the docket for Tuesday were canceled due to weather issues.
The good news is with the exception of Brook Hill — the Lady Guard open the regular season at 4:30 p.m. Monday by hosting East Texas Christian Academy — all of the local and area teams will be action later this week.
Jacksonville and New Summerfield (junior varsity) will be taking part in the Longview Tournament, which gets under way today and runs through Saturday.
New Summerfield is fielding a team for the first time this year and will compete at the junior varsity level as they prepare to jump to the varsity ranks next season.
Rusk's Lady Eagles will be making a return trip to the Bryan-College Station Tournament, which also starts today and runs for three days.
Bullard will head west, as the Lady Panthers are slated to play in the North Forney Tournament, also a three day event.
The diamond nine of Troup will host the Canton Eaglettes for a single game that is schedule to get under way at 6 p.m. Friday at Lady Tiger Park.
The No. 3-ranked (Class A) Alto Lady Jackets will be playing in the Lufkin HudsonTournament (today through Saturday), which will be played at Kit McConnico Park in Lufkin.
Alto is coached by Luke Balkcom, who is in his third season in charge of the Lady Jackets.
Alto will be gunning for a 16-straight district championship this spring.
