Pair of marquee baseball/softball games involving JHS, Rusk teams on tap

JACKSONVILLE — Baseball and softball fans in Jacksonville and Rusk are in for a real treat over the next 72 hours as two games that should be of considerable interest are scheduled to be play; one in Jacksonville and the other in Rusk.

A noon today the Fight'n Indians of Jacksonville will host Rusk's Eagle in a non-district baseball game.

The game will serve as Senior Day for the Indians, with seven young men slated to be recognized.

Those players include, Garrett Bonner, Ruston Diers, Jeff Pryor, Zeke Edwards, Dilon Rodriquez, Trevor Ewalt and Brett Eckles.

Both teams played games Friday night — Jacksonville was at Lindale and Rusk hosted Center — with the results being unavailable as of press time.

The Tribe (8-19), who are coached by Mike Eckles, ended what had been a six-game losing streak on Tuesday night when the Tribe hammered John Tyler, 10-0.

The Indians are 2-6 against Class 3-A teams this season.

Rusk (13-12) has won six of its last even outings under the guidance of head coach Jason Barnes.

The Eagles are currently in first place in the District 19-3A standings.

Today's match-up is a varsity only one, as there will be no junior varsity game played.

Battle of  state ranked softball powers to collide Monday in Rusk

RUSK — At 6 p.m. Monday No. 4 Rusk will host No. 5 Henderson in a rematch of a game that the Lady Eagles won, 3-0, on Feb. 19 in Rusk.

Both teams strolled through their respective districts with an undefeated record and have received first-round byes and will use this game as a tightener for their first-round playoff battles which will get under way on Apr. 29 or 30.

All eyes should be on the pitching circle as Rusk's Sydney Littlejohn will most likely be going up against Henderson's Tiara Davis.

These two young ladies are two of the best high school pitchers in Texas. Both have signed with prestigious NCAA Division I programs — Littlejohn with defending national champion Alabama and Davis with Texas of the Big XII Conference.

This game has all the makings to be a real pitchers duel.

The Lady Eagles will face Celina at 6 p.m. Friday in Kemp in their final outing before opening the playoffs.
