JHS's Franklin, Parson qualify for track regionals
LANCASTER – Jacksonville's Dadrian Franklin and Jasmine Parson earned places into the Class 4A, Region II, Track and Field Championships by finishing in the top four in their respective events at the District 15-4A/16-4A Area meet on Friday at Beverly Humphrey Stadium in Lancaster. Franklin finished first in high jump and triple jump, while Parson came in fourth in girl's long jump. Franklin cleared 6' 8” in high jump, which was four inches better than the second-place finisher. In triple jump Franklin landed a leap of 47' 3”. Parson came away with a 17' 6” fete. The regional meet will take place Friday and Saturday at UT-Arlington's Maverick Stadium.
16-4A Softball: Lindale trips up Maidens in finale
LINDALE – Lindale defeated Jacksonville 11-2 on Friday night in the regular-season finale for both teams. The Maidens finished 10-16 overall, 2-8 in District 16-4A. The Lady Eagles ended the year at 9-22, 5-5. Jacksonville will graduate just one senior (Mackenzie Crow) and should return the nucleus of the club next season.
TAPPS 4-3A Baseball: Brook Hill completes undefeated district campaign
McKinney – The Brook Hill baseball train kept rolling along Friday by leveling McKinney Christian, 19-2, 16-0 in McKinney. The pair of wins enabled the defending state champion Guardsmen to end the TAPPS 4-3A season undefeated (8-0) — Brook Hill is 19-4 overall. In the opener, Clayton Engel and Drew Robertson collected three hits each. Robertson drove in four runs as did Blake Maddox. Quintin Pile, a Wofford University signee, fanned eight in three innings of work on the hump. In Game 2, Daniel Priddy tossed a one hitter and struck out 11 and walked a pair. He lost his no-hit bid with two outs in the fifth and final inning. Priddy helped his own cause by doubling and driving home three runs in the game. Maddox went 3-for-4 at the dish with 3 RBI while Jonah Gonzales and Pile picked up three hits apiece. Brook Hill is slated to host Central Heights at 6 p.m. this evening.
Former JC coach takes a new job with Angelo State
SAN ANGELO — Former Jacksonville College head men's basketball coach Cinco Boone was named as the assistant men's basketball coach at Angelo State University (NCAA, Division II) late last week. Boone and newly named Angelo State head coach Chris Beard come to Angelo state after serving in the same capacities at McMurry University in Abilene last season. McMurry finished with a 19-10 record last year and advanced to the regional tournament final.
NBA Playoffs: Spurs upend Lakers in Game 1
SAN ANTONIO (AP) -- Manu Ginobili and Tony Parker scored 18 points each as the San Antonio Spurs led from early in the first quarter and beat the Los Angeles Lakers 91-79 on Sunday in Game 1 of their Western Conference first-round series.
