Men's JUCO Basketball: Jaguars tap into talent-rich Baltimore for latest signee

JACKSONVILLE —

“Charm City” — Baltimore — has supplied Jacksonville College with its most recent men's basketball signee as 6-foot-7, 185-pound Rashard Todd officially became a member of the Purple and White on Monday.

According to JC head men's basketball coach Jody Bailey, the heavily recruited Todd's decision to play for the Jags was a rather charming one.

“Rashard originally committed to play for Central Connecticut State, a (NCAA) D-I school,” Bailey explained. “He was also recruited by just about every junior college in the Baltimore area...he had a lot of options and we are just thankful that he decided to come to Jacksonville College.”

Bailey said two things swayed the power forward with a sweet shot to come to Texas.

“I believe Rashard was attracted to our conference (Texas Eastern Conference, NJCAA region XIV) and the quality basketball that our teams play night in, night out,” Bailey said. “Also Rashard was aware of what our men's basketball team has done over the past two or three years and, frankly, he wanted to be a part of that.”

Bailey said that he likes Todd's length and that he has the ability to play multiple positions, both on the offensive and defense end of the floor.

Todd, who has only played basketball for four years, prepped at Our Lady of Mount Carmel High School and played on a couple of Baltimore-based AAU teams as well.

The Jag coaching staff has been beating the bushes and turning over rocks in the Baltimore area for a couple of years now and Bailey said that he is very happy to have seen those efforts finally rewarded.

“There are just so many talented players in and around Baltimore,” he said. “We're real excited about signing our first player from Baltimore and to be able to break through in that market.”

The Jags now have the services of nine players locked up according to the coach.

“We are awaiting the paperwork to be completed on two more kids, so that only leaves us one more spot to fill,” a relieved Bailey said late Monday afternoon.

Any Jacksonville Fightin' Indian football fans that have not taken note of the Tribe's new conference home — District 16-5A — will probably want to take a few minutes and get familiar with a league that has been labeled as perhaps “the deepest (Class 5A) district in the state” by at least one expert in such matters.

Josh McCown expects the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to be better this season. He's just reluctant to speculate how much.

The 35-year-old quarterback is beginning his 13th NFL training camp, though it's his first as a team's projected starter since he was with the Arizona Cardinals in 2004.
