TJC Wagstaff Classic: Brook Hill takes it on the chin from Athens

TYLER — Brook Hill, a top-10 team in TAPPS 3-A, found the going tough in its opening game of the Wagstaff Holiday Classic Thursday, as the Guard fell, 73-57, to Athens, who improved to 13-1 with the victory.

The Hornets (UIL, Class 3A) led 51-34 at the half after forcing a bevy of Brook Hill turnovers in the opening half. Athens was able to convert the bulk of the Brook Hill errors into baskets.

Brook Hill (10-8) saved it best for last however. The Guardsmen outscored the Hornets 18-2 in the fourth stanza.

Grant Hanks ended the game with 22 points for the Guard and Alex Hale knocked in 15.

Athens was paced in scoring by Ryan Jefferson with 22.

In other first-round affairs involving area schools, the Troup Tigers got the best of Bishop T. K. Gorman, winning 58-51.

Bullard's Panthers were upset, 39-37, by Brownsboro in a defensive-dominated affair.

The tournament is slated to run through Saturday at Wagstaff Fieldhouse on the Tyler Junior College campus.
