Tribe Tennis: De La Rosa comes in 4th at Corsicana tourney

CORSICANA —

Jacksonville High School's tennis team made up a formidable field in the Corsicana Spring Slam which took place late last week.

Host Corsicana won the tournament with 146 points, with All Saints taking second, tallying 130 points, and Willis (106) coming in third.

The Tribe did have some nice individual efforts, however.

In boy's “B” singles,Bryan De La Rosa came in second.

De La Rosa defeated opponents from John Tyler (8-0), Kilgore (8-2) and All Saints (6-2, 7-6) to advance into the consolation finals.

In that match, De La Rosa fell in three sets, 6-4, 1-6, (3-10) to a foe from Corsicana.

Jacksonville's boy's “B” doubles unit of Chris Shoemaker & Stephen Spraggins won fourth place.

After receiving a first round bye, the Jacksonville duo beat Corsicana #2, 8-4.

In the semi-finals, Shoemaker & Spraggins lost to a squad out of Kilgore 2-6, 0-6.

A Corsicana duo stopped the Jacksonville pair in the third place match, 0-8.

     The summer junior golf tour schedule is now in the home stretch and Jacksonville's Cameron Brown is closing like a freight train.

    Brown played in two tournaments this week and came in third place in each, while going up against some top-caliber junior golfers from the Metroplex.

    On Monday and Tuesday, the son of Dean and Mary Carol Brown, played in a Texas Junior Golf Tour (TJGT) stop at TPC Craig Ranch in McKinney where he shot rounds of 73 and 71 to earn third place out of a field of 54 boys.

    The Rusk Rangers 14U team were scheduled to take on Malakoff Monsters Friday night in an elimination game in the Texas Teen-Age Baseball Association (TTA) state tournament in Hillsboro.

    Rusk suffered its first lost in the double-elimination event after falling to the Eagles from Mildred.

    In filling its opening for a head girl's basketball coach, The Brook Hill School turned to Ivan Johnson, a coach that has been has achieved playoff success in TAPPS circles.

    Johnson was introduced as Brook Hill's man to lead the Lady Guard hoop charges Tuesday afternoon in a press conference that was held on campus at the Kyle Lake Athletic Center.
