JACKSONVILLE — WIth every passing day we inch one step closer to the opening of the 2013 schoolboy football season, which gets under way on the final weekend of the month.
Football fans can get a fix this Friday and Saturday when four area teams are slated to suit up for thier first scrimmage of the fall.
The Troup Tigers, coming off of a 9-2 season last year under head coach Dennis Alexander, will lift the lid on the jamborees when they travel to Longview for a 6:15 p.m. date opposite the Spring Hill Panthers on Friday night.
The remaining contests will all take place on Saturday.
A rebuilding Bullard club will host Brownsboro at 9 a.m. at Panther Stadium, while Rusk faces Diboll at the Lumberjacks' home stadium an hour later.
Also at 9 a.m. Saturday, Alto, ranked No. 2 in Texas Class A-I preseason polls, entertains the Bulldogs from Crockett.
Alto is coached by Paul Gould, who was promoted to head coach following the retirement of longtime Yellowjacket mentor, Keith Gardner.
The Jacksonville Fight'n Indians will be involved in a single exhibition game this fall and that will take place on Aug. 22 when the Tribe visit Bullard. A final decison on start time of those games will be made early next week.
Should Indian fans wish to catch a glimpse of the Tribe's opening night opponent, Carthage, the Dawgs will be playing Kilgore in a tune-up game that is scheduled for 7 p.m. Friday night at Bulldog Stadium in Carthage.
NOTE: At 6 p.m. Saturday evening Rusk's Eagle Stadium will host a scrimmage between Palestine Westwood and San Augustine.
