JACKSONVILLE — JHS Soccer: Maidens, Indians hit the road for playoff openers tonight

Both of the Jacksonville High School soccer teams face long road trips this evening as they open post season play with Class 4-A, Region III, bi-district matches. The Maidens will take on College Station at 7 p.m. at the Waco ISD Complex while the boys will trek to Conroe ISD Stadium for a 5 p.m. tilt against Bryan Rudder. Jacksonville's girls finished fourth in the District 35-4A standings, while the Tribe came in third.

JHS Tennis: Savage and De La Rosa sparkle at Van Tournament, Tribe finish 2nd overall

VAN — Kristie Savage took first place in girls “B” singles and Bryan De La Rosa ended up second in boys “B” singles at the Van Tournament on Friday.  Jacksonville also had two of its doubles units to take runner-up spots also. Samantha Lee & Carolina Hernandez earned second place in girls “A” doubles while the Tribe duo of Suzi McCuistion & Maria Landin won second in girls “B” doubles. Savage defeated players from All Saints, Nacogdoches and Whitehouse before tossing Stroud of Van (6-4, 6-0) in the finals. De La Rosa had an opening-round bye and then notched victories over opponents from Sulphur Springs, Sunnyvale and Mineola to earn a spot in the finals where he was defeated (0-6, 1-6) by Bullard's Landon Beckham in the finals match.

16-4A Baseball: Whitehouse's Cheatum hurls a no-no at Tribesmen

Whitehouse's Ryan Cheatum was a one-man wrecking crew Friday night. Cheatum hurled a no hitter and struck out 12 in the Wildcats' 9-1 win over Jacksonville at Summers Norman Field. Cheatum also doubled and drove in three runs for the Wildcats (12-5, 2-0 16-4A). The Indians (6-13, 0-2) will travel to John Tyler (7 p.m.) tonight in search of their first conference win.

16-4A Softball: Ladycats keep Maidens winless in district

Whitehouse downed Jacksonville 15-3 in a District 16-4A softball game that took place at Fight'n Maiden Park on Friday evening. Jacksonville (8-11, 0-3 16-4A) will visit John Tyler at 6 p.m. tonight.

    While the Alto Lady Jackets were taking on Pollok Central, a state-ranked Class 3A team, Tuesday evening in a warm-up scrimmage, the new Texas Girls Coaches Association Class A softball team was released.

    In that newly minted poll, the Lady Jackets took command of the No. 1 spot for the first time this season.

    Alto (20-3), the undefeated District 21-A champions, displaced Beckville (29-2) from the top spot.

    Troup's Lady Tiger softball team sent its three seniors off in fine fashion Friday night by walloping Winona, 11-0, at Lady Tiger Park.

    The win locked up the District t 18-2A championship for Troup, and marked the fourth-straight season that the Lady Tigers have won the district crown.

    Martin Melchor of Jacksonville High School was voted by the District 35-4A boys soccer coaches as the circuit's Offensive Most Valuable Player.

    Melchor is the all-time leading scorer in Tribe soccer history. He will continue his academic and athletic career at Coastal Carolina University (NCAA, Division I) following his graduation from JHS later this spring.

    The Lady Panthers of Bullard nailed down their 20th win of the season on Monday by humbling Harelton, 10-2, in a warm-up game that was played at the UT-Tyler Softball Field.

    The Lady Panthers will take on Athens in a Class 3A, Region II bi-district best-of-three series that gets under way beginning at 6 p.m. Friday at Grand Saline High School.

    The teams will travel back to Grand Saline for a noon game on Saturday, with a Game 3 (if needed) to follow the second contest.
