3A Area Baseball: Bullard booted out of playoffs by last year’s state champions; PG wins in 2

MARSHALL — The Pleasant Grove Hawks' return trip to Austin and the state baseball tournament is still alive after a two-game sweep over Bullard in Class 3A, Region II action on Saturday at Woods Field, on the East Texas Baptist campus.

As it was in Game 1, Panther miscues in the field proved fatal for Bullard.

After a 4-2 win in Friday's opener, the Hawks took advantage of five Panther errors and made the most of only three hits on Saturday afternoon, leading to a 3-0 win for the defending state champions.

One of the Panther errors aided the first run inning by Pleasant Grove, scoring Alex Alsup after a lead off single, and another Panther miscue advanced the runner.

The Bullard bats were by no means silenced, slapping seven singles in the game but leaving six runners on base.

The Panthers got two hits from J.P. Hendrix, while Holden Bryant, Trevor Rumbelow, Britt Thomas, Jesse Duplechin, and Conner Mebane all added one hit apiece in the Panther finale of the year.

Hawks, Ty Hart had the only extra base hit of the game, doubling to start the six inning. Two batters later, winning pitcher Trey Jeans ripped an RBI-single down the left field line and a 2-0 lead.

Bullard’s season is over with a 21-8 season mark, and runner up in District 16-3A.

“I’m very proud of these guys and they way they played,” said head coach, Judd Guidry following the loss. “We kinda hit a low point in district but once we made the playoffs we started playing our best ball of the year.

“The guys played hard, and no doubt about it they (Pleasant Grove) has a solid team but we were just a few plays away from things going our way,” Guidry added. “They played hard and competed right down to the last out.

Guidry also had praise for his nine seniors.

“We had a great group of senior leaders and all nine players have played together for a long time and I know they are hurting right now but, you can’t make eight errors in two games and expect to win against a good team like them,” Guidry concluded.

Pleasant Grove (21-11), will advance to play Athens in a regional quarterfinal later this week. The date, site and time are to be announced.
