The New Summerfield High School boys soccer team earned its sixth-consecutive victory Friday by prevailing over the Wildcats of Waskom, 2-1.
The Hornets, who are in their first season, moved to 8-4-0 with the win,
Jose Mendoza, streaking down the sideline, received a perfect pass from Francisco Parra and then rocketed the ball into the net for the Hornets' second goal of the match, which turned out to be the game winner for New Summerfield.
The score came late in the first half.
The Wildcats battled to the end and did mange to score once in the closing segment.
But, top shelf defensive efforts from defenders Cesar Hernanadez and Gerardo Sainz, coupled with the determination of New Summerfield goalkeeper Abel Servin, prevented the Wildcats from doing any further damage.
New Summerfield will be hosting the Small School Soccer Conference Tournament on Mar. 7-8 at Bill McRae Field on the campus of Jacksonville College.
