16-3A Baseball: Panthers return to winning ways
BULLARD — Bullard got back on the winning track on Friday by clipping Spring Hill 6-5 at Panther Field. Bullard is now 15-5 overall and 5-1 in District 16-3A. JP Hendrix went 2-for-3 and scored a run for Bullard, while Holden Bryant, Haden Bryant, Conner Mebane, Cody Goode and Trevor Rumbelow each had one hit. Rumbelow's was a double. Jacob Provencher walked twice, was hit by a pitch and drove in a run. Zach Eschberger worked six innings and fanned nine while not walking a batter to pick up the win on the hill for Bullard. Rumbelow pitched the final frame and and struck out one and walked one to notch a save. Bullard will visit Kilgore on Friday. First pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Driller Park.
18-2A Softball: Lady Tigers lose for first time in district
GLADEWATER — The Troup Lady Tiger softball team gave an uncharacteristic lackluster performance n Friday night and the Lady Eagles of Harmony took advantage by upsetting the No.8-ranked (Class 2A) Lady Tigers, 4-3. Troup (22-5-2, 8-1 in 18-2A) continues to lead the conference by one game, with Harmony (7-2) occupying third place. Troup bats could muster up just four hits on the night, while the Lady Tigers committed seven errors in the field. Caitlin Tomlin led Troup at the plate by going 1-for-3 with two RBI. Her hit was a two-run homer over the centerfield wall that came in the top of the third inning. “I truly feel that this loss will turn into a positive for my girls,” Troup head coach Sam Weeks said. “They need to (learn) that they will have to show up ready to play for each and every game.” Troup visits West Rusk at 5:30 p.m. Friday.
JHS's Kelley named as East Texas Coach of the Year
TYLER — Jacksonville head boy's basketball coach Brent Kelley has been named by the Tyler Morning Telegraph/ETFinalScore.com as its Coach of the Year. Indians Dadrian Franklin and Kedarrius Buckingham were picked as Second Team members on the publication's All East Texas squad. Brook Hill had Grant Hanks elected to the Third Team. Included on the Honorable Mention roll were: Londedric Taylor, Daytron Thompson and Raybon Riden from Jacksonville; Scott Lowrie and Corbin Howard, out of Bullard and Chase McDermott, Phillip Kitt and Alex Hale representing Brook Hill. In addition, Rusk placed Jadarian Skinner and Ray Foremen onto the Honorable Mention list. Troup sent a trio, Bradley Stewart, Shaquille Rollins and Richard Lacy to the team as well.
Josh McCown to return to Bears
CHICAGO — Former Jacksonville Indian great Josh McCown has agreed to a one-year contract to remain a Chicago Bear the team reported on Friday. McCown originally signed with Chicago in November 2011. Last season he played behind quarterbacks Jay Cutler and Jason Campbell and did not see any playing time. Campbell bolted for Cleveland since the end of the 2012 season. McCown will turn 34 in July.
Final Four teams now established
ATLANTA — The NCAA Men's Basketball Championships are down to four teams now. Louisville will go up against Wichita State at 5:05 p.m. (CST) Saturday from the Georgia Dome in Atlanta, with Michigan slated to battle on Syracuse at 7:49 p.m. (CST) on the same evening.
