New Summerfield sailed into hostile waters, better known as Yellowjacket Gymnasium, Tuesday night and dispensed Alto a 58-56 loss to take over sole possession of first place in the District 21-A-I standings.

Austin Gray drained a pair of free throws with 1.56 seconds showing on the clock to cement the verdict for the visiting Hornets.

New Summerfield extended its winning streak to eight games with the win.

The Hornets are 4-0 in conference play, while Alto slips into second place at 3-1 – the teams will meet again early next month in New Summerfield.

The Hornets trailed 29-28 at halftime and were down by five points as late as two minutes to go in the game, which was played before a boisterous and capacity crowd.

“This was one of the most intense and exciting games that I have ever been a part of,” New Summerfield head coach Jason Davis said. “Alto has some big ole boys that know how to play basketball.

“It wasn't easy, but our kids played with great heart and great hustle and that's what won it for us in the end.”

Gray finished with 20 points to lead the Hornets, who host Wells on Friday.

Freshman Case Wilkerson tossed in 15 and Angel Marroquin knocked in 11.

Rounding out the scoring for New Summerfield was Wendle Thomas with six and Ryan Weaver who had two.

Zach Sturns poured in 20 for Alto, with Leroy Lewis adding 10.

“The fans really got their monies worth (Tuesday),” Davis said. “Hopefully we both can keep winning and when Alto comes to our house later in the season it will be for the district championship.”
