Posting a 5-0-1 record and blitzing by two state-ranked clubs, the Troup High School softball team was able to capture first place in the Gold Bracket of the Carthage Dawg Fight Tournament over the weekend.
The Lady Tigers (6-0-1) blasted Beckville, 5-2, to win the title game on Saturday.
Katelyn Standley went 2-for-3 with 2 RBI and a double to lead Troup at the plate.
Miranda Flora also went 2-for-3.
Josee Ross collected the complete-game win in the circle. She allowed two runs on eight hits and struck out nine while walking four.
Standley earned an All-Tournament medal for her performance, while Ross garnered an All-Tournament ball.
Ross struck out 52 batters in 40 innings of work and allowed only five runs.
Troup also edged Linden-Kildare (2-1), who is ranked No. 5 in Class 2A.
The Lady Tigers plated both of their runs in the first inning in that game.
L-K outhit Troup 4-1, but had difficulty in getting base runners around to score.
Standley's two-run double was Troup's only hit in the game.
Ross fanned seven and gave up no walks to earn the win in the circle.
The Lady Tigers carved out victories over Elysian Fields (3-0) and Tyler Lee (5-0), while playing Gilmer to a 2-2 tie.
Bethany Mason went 1-for-3 and stole four bases in the Tyler Lee game.
Caitlin Tomlin lifted a home run in the game as a part of a five-hit Troup attack.
Troup is scheduled to visit Carthage at 7 p.m. this evening.
“I am very pleased with their work efforts and performance this past weekend,” Troup head coach Sam Weeks said. “We have a long season ahead of us and it looks very promising.”
