The good news for New Summerfield is the Hornets have an Area Round date in the Class A-I, Region III state playoffs with the Bulldogs of Broaddus (6:30 p.m. Friday at Tenaha High School).
Now, for the unpleasant tidings.
The Hornets, who recently glided through District 21-A-I with a perfect 10-0 record, will have to square off against the Bulldogs without two of its starters.
Wendle Thomas will be unavailable due to disciplinary reasons while Angel Marroquin suffered a major ankle injury in a warm-up game against Douglass on Monday night and will not be able to compete Friday.
“No doubt this is a major blow for us,” New Summerfield head coach Jason Davis said. “It's always bad to lose starters, but Wendle and Angel account for most of our height and going up a team like Broaddus who has several big boys, really makes it tough.
“But, were not throwing in the towel. We feel we have some other weapons that we can use, so you never know how things will turn out.”
Broaddus, the third-place finisher out of District 23-A-I, speared the Sharks of Sabine Pass, 75-54, Tuesday to advance into Area play.
The Bulldogs return the core of a team that advanced all the way to the regional quarterfinals a year ago.
