NEW SUMMERFIELD —

The New Summerfield High School girl's basketball team cam very close to recording its first win of the season Thursday morning in the opening game of the New Summerfield Tip-Off Tournament.

But, on the strength of 72.5-percent (29-of-40) free throw shooting Laneville's Lady Jackets were able to rally in the second half to get past New Summerfield, 59-53.

The Lady Hornets had their chances at the charity stripe, but could connect on only 3-of-20 (15-percent) tries, which proved to be the difference in the game.

The win was Laneville's first of the year against two defeats, while the Lady Hornets slipped to 0-4 with the loss.

New Summerfield led 24-21 at intermission, but the Lady Jackets outscored the Lady Hornets 38-29 in the final 16 minutes of play to log the win.

After New Summerfield had jumped out to its largest lead of the day, 32-21, with 5:32 to go in the third stanza, Laneville ginned a 16-0 run to move in front, 38-33, with 1:33 to go in the third.

After the Lady Jackets expanded the margin to double digits, the Lady Hornets got themselves right back into the affair when Isela Zuniga made one of two free throw tries at the 4:46 mark of the fourth frame that cut Laneville's lead to 47-44.

From that point on Laneville lived at the free throw line where the visitors for Rusk County made 10-of-12 freebies in the final 3:52 seconds to seal the deal.

Defensively, despite being in deep foul trouble, the Lady Hornets held Laneville to 1-of-11 from the field in the fourth period.

Quisha Anderson led the Lady Jackets in scoring with 24 points, 20 of which came in the second half where Anderson drained 11-of-13 free throws in the last period.

Kendall Elhanon added 21 points and shagged 10 rebounds.

New Summerfield was paced offensively by Cristal Zuniga with 15 points. Zuniga went 5-for-11 from beyond the arc.

Alex Turner came in off of the bench and tossed in nine points, followed by Isela Zuniga with eight.

Hallee Lawson had a team best eight rebounds for New Summerfield.

New Summerfield will play either LaPoyner or Riverdale Academy (Coushatta, La.) at 9:30 a.m. Friday morning in a consolation semi-final.

The tournament wraps up on Saturday evening.
