LUFKIN —

Newton's Calun Foster ran for three touchdowns and rushed for a game-best 151 yards as No. 2-ranked Newton coasted past Troup, 39-0, Friday night in a Class 2A-I, bi-district battle that took place at John Outlaw Memorial Field-Abe Martin Stadium.

The Eagles had the Tigers backing up from their first possession and scoring three touchdowns and adding a field goal for a 32-0 lead before the Tigers could stop the Eagles.

Newton quarterback, Roney Elam capped off the first drive with a 24-yard run, and also added the PAT run.

Brandon Johnson finished off the next drive with a 48-yard blast and a 15-0 lead after one stanza.

Brandon Foster scored for 10-yards out and Logan Westbrook booted a 35-yard field goal.

The Newton run was not done.

Foster broke loose for 50-yards and a score, and a 31-0, advantage before a turnover set up the final score of the half.

The Eagles added on after a Newton linebacker, Ched Hanks took the hands from a Tiger ball carrier to set up one final Eagle score before the half.

Running back, Calun Foster scored his second touchdown within a minute with a 117-yard scamper, and the Logan Westbrook PAT kick was true with 1:38 left in the opening half, and a 39-0, Eagles lead at intermission.

The Newton running attack made the game one-sided early on with 286 yards and five touchdown runs. Troup’s Marcus Kincade made one interception in the half to stop the Newton squad from a score. Troup however fumbled the ball right back on the ensuing play.

The purple-clad Eagles held a commanding 317-26 cushion in total yards.

Newton began to swap the lineup out in the third quarter with neither team scoring in the third period. As five new running backs got reps in the final half as the clock rolled for the 39-0 final.

Troup, under the direction of the fourth winning coach in Texas football history, Dennis Alexander, ends its season with a 6-5 record.

Newton (11-0), will now face the winner of the Teague and Whitney game in the Area round late next week.
