Troup now 17-4-2; steamrolls field to win own tourney

TROUP — It was a weekend to remember for the Troup High School softball team, as the Lady Tigers scored a 13-3 District 18-2A victory over West Rusk on Friday.

Bookended around that win was Troup going 6-0 to win first place in the Troup Tournament.

The annual tourney was staged on Thursday and Saturday.

OnThursday the Lady Tigers of head coach Sam Weeks socked Cushing with a 7-0 setback, beat Buffalo 11-0 and posted wins over Centerville (17-4) and West Rusk (12-0).

In Saturday play, Troup got thing rolling with an 11-2 win over Overton's Lady Mustangs.

Later in the day the Lady Tigers punched out a 12-2 verdict over Krum, a Class 3A team, in the championship game.

Katelyn Standley and Josee Ross earned All-Tournament medals for the Lady Tigers.

“I wish we could have given a medal to everyone on the team because (our success) was really the result of everyone contributing in some way,” Weeks said. “I am so proud of these girls. They work so hard at this sport and that is why they have been able to do what they have done.”



Fri.- Troup 13, West Rusk 3 (18-2A game) — The Lady Tigers improved to 3-0 in conference play by  routing the Lady Raiders in New London. Troup plated four runs in the first, fourth and fifth frames in a game that was called after five complete due to the 10-run rule. Lady Tiger bats pounded Lady Raider pitching for 15 hits on the day. Lee Ann Lloyd and Bethany Mason each went 3-3, while Josee Ross turned in a 3-4 day at the plate. Ross and Katelyn Standley each clubbed out a pair of doubles. Standley led her team in RBI with three. Ross got the win in the circle and allowed just four hits. She fanned six and didn't walk a batter.

Thur.- Troup 7, Cushing 0 — Troup scored seven runs on eight hits to quiet Cushing. Ross pitched a complete-game one-hitter to earn the pitching win.  She struck out eight and didn't give up a single free pass. Madison martin and Ross went 2-2 at the plate for the Lady Tigers. Standley drove in two of the Lady Tiger runs. Macey Minnix went 1-1 (double).

Thur.- Troup 11, Buffalo 0 — Lloyd went the distance in the circle for Troup and tossed a one-hitter while striking out three and walking one.  Troup pushed across 10 runs in the first inning against the outmatched Lady Buffaloes. Mackenzie Hugghins, Caitlin Tomlin, Emily Stone and Ross picked up hits for Troup. Ross drove in three Lady Tigers. The game was called after two innings.

Thur.- Troup 17, Centerville 4 —  Troup bats cracked out 12 hits in this three-inning affair. Martin, mason, Standley and Ross had two safeties apiece for the winners. Both of Standley's hits were homers and she ended the game with five RBI. Ross drove in three runs. Ross worked he first inning and got credit with the pitching win, with Lloyd coming in and finishing things out in the circle for Troup.

Sat.-Troup 12, West Rusk 0 (non-district) — In a game that was called after five innings, West Rusk proved to be no threat to the No. 13-ranked Lady Tigers, once again. Ross worked all five frames for the Lady Tigers and needed just 62 pitches to put away the Lady Raiders in no-hit fashion. Ross rang up 10 West Rusk hitters. She also led Troup at the plate by going 3-4. Included in Ross' hits were a double and a triple. Standley homered and drove in three runs for the Lady Tigers. Martin and Mason also whittled out doubles for Troup.

Sat.- Troup 11, Overton 2 — A seven-run fifth inning was all Troup needed to send Overton packing in the abbreviated (five inning) tilt. The Lady Tigers exploded for a dozen hits in the game. Mason, Stanley, Ross and Jaclyn Bender collected two hits apiece to pace Troup. Ross hit a home run and knocked in three runs. Standley hit a double and a triple. Ross fanned nine and walked four and earned the one-hit victory.

Sat.- Troup 12, Krum 2 — Standley, a Stephen F. Austin signee, went 4-4, including two triples and knocked in a team-high five runs to pace the 13-hit Lady Tiger attack. Tomlin had a  3-4 game as well and was credited with two RBI. Lloyd tripled out of the lead -off spot and also went 3-4 in the game. Ross, who picked up four hits in as many trips to the dish, struck out 11 through six innings to earn the pitching victory. She gave up four hits and walked three.
