Alto football opened the 2013 season with high hopes but after the Yellowjackets fell in two of the team's first three outings, voters in the Associated Press Class A High School Football Poll have excluded the 'Jackets of head coach Paul Gould in this week's listing of the top Class A teams in the state.
After opening the year as a Class A top 10 team, Alto fell victim to Elkhart, 36-35, in Zero Week.
The Mean Sting bounced back the following week to outscore Groveton, 47-27.
But in last Friday's loss 42-7 defeat to Tenaha, the Alto defense again had trouble keeping opponents out of the end zone — Alto gave up 379 total yard to the Tigers (2-1), who are ranked No. 6 in this week's Associated Press Class A Football Poll.
Things should get easier for the Mean Sting this week when they entertain winless Frankston (0-3) at 7:30 p.m. At Yellowjacket Stadium.
Stanford, Wellington and Stratford, all 3-0, occupy the first three spots in the Class A poll this week.
Carthage, Gilmer sit atop Class 3A poll
If one wants to know anything about the cream of the crop in Class 3A, just ask the Jacksonville Indians.
The Tribesmen have lost to both Carthage (42-28) and Gilmer (60-20) already this season and while there's no denying the quality of each of those outfits, Jacksonville head coach Chris Taber said that in his estimation Gilmer is the best Class 3A team in Texas.
“To be in mid-season form in Week 2 shows just how good Gilmer really is,” Taber said. “And they played last week without three of their top players, one who is a Texas A&M signee. They (Gilmer) are an impressive team and are the best team that we have faced this season.”
After Jacksonville jumped out to an early 7-0 advantage the Buckeyes scored on their next nine consecutive possessions in route to ta 47-7 halftime lead.
A pair of 3-0 clubs, Navasota and Argyle, are right behind Carthage and Gilmer in the Class 3A ranking, with another East Texas school, Kilgore in fifth place.
The top three teams in Class 5-A this week are Allen, Katy and DeSoto, all sporting 3-0 worksheets.
Cameron Yoe, Newton and East Bernard are the highest ranked squads in Class 2A.
