NEW SUMMERFIELD —

The quite little community of New Summerfield will be filled with activity Saturday as New Summerfield High School hosts the East Texas Cross Country Invitational.

The meet has drawn 14 high schools which will run varsity and junior varsity divisions for both males and females.

In addition to host New Summerfield, Alto, Grapeland, Pollak Central, Carthage, Cushing, Timpson, Union Grove, Gladewater, Arp, Shelbyville, Mount Enterprise, Gary and East Texas Christian Academy are expected.

As an added bonus, there will also be college divisions (men and womens).

According to the meet director, New Summerfield High School cross country coach, Kent Willis, UT-Tyler, LeTourneau University, Wiley College, Jarvis Christian College, UT-Brownsville, Our Lady of the Lake University, Prairie View A&M University and Southwest Assemblies of God University will comprise the collegiate field.

Willis said that he is optimistic concerning the New Summerfield boys' team.

"Our top guys are Francisco Parra, Alfredo Hernandez and Rafael Garcia," he said. "They have been working hard this fall and hopefully running over their home course will benefit them."

In 2012, Willis' first year at New Summerfield the Hornets won the district championship and went onto finish fifth at regionals.

Willis started cross country and track and field programs at what used to be Lon Morris College and guided both to compete at the national level in the NJCAA in a short period of time.
