4-A Region II XC Meet: Maidens, Indians both come in 17th

Both the Jacksonville Indian and Maiden cross country teams were in action Saturday at Lynn Creek Park in Grand Prairie, the site of the UIL Class 4A Region II Cross Country Championships.

Ironically enough both squads finished in 17th place in the team standings.

Twenty-two boys units were entered, while two dozen girls teams vied for spots in the state meet, to be held later this week.

The Tribe's Jerry Romano, a junior, was the first Jacksonville runner to cross the finish line in the boy's 5K run.

Romano was clocked in 17:28, which put him in 52nd place in the field of 171.

Next was Pedro Mirelas (17:50.9, 76th).

Braulio Garcia finished 107th, while Jonathan Garcia wound up 136th.

Ander Lopez took the 145th spot, followed by Emilio Chavira (154th).

Evan Barron of Pine Tree won the race in a time of 16:00.40.

Frisco Wakeland (55), Dallas Highland park (102) and Lucas Lovejoy (108) were the leaders in the team standings.


Varsity Girls

Tempestt Silvers (21:15.20, 63rd), a sophomore, paced the Jacksonville distaff effort. Freshman Shannon Chilton was next (22:39.90, 99th), followed by Mirian Mendoza (22:51.90, 103rd).

Rounding out the order of finish for the Maidens were, Marisol Ornelas (124th), Ariana Morris (131st) and Ester Botello (139th).

A total of 172 young ladies ran in the 5,000-meter event.

The race's winner was Natalie Rathjen from Dallas Highland Park, who froze the timer at 17:59.70.

Mansfield Legacy (92), Dallas Highland Park (94) and Frisco Heritage (117) ended up one, two, three in the team standings.
